Sunglossary of Terms
Acetate - a synthetic material composed mainly of cellulose, commonly
used in sunglasses for it’s greater sensitivity to high temperatures during shaping, while also known for having greater strength when cold or wet. Bridge - The area between lenses or area over the nose connecting the two lenses. normally expressed in (mm). CR39 lens - an optical quality plastic made of hard resin, it is considered the best plastic for lenses. It weights half as much as glass and exceeds FDA requirements for impact-resistance by 500%. Gradient or fade - A tint that is applied to lenses, making the top portion of the lens darker than the bottom. many standard soda sunglasses lenses have a gradient, which provides greater clarity and enhanced vision. Handmade - process by which acetate sunglasses are made, referring to the hand tooling and polishing required to create the high end finished product. Injection molded - process by which polypropinate material is heated and injected into sunglass molds, creating an extremely cost effective yet durable frame with memory that returns to its original shape. Lens colors - Grey is The most popular color for general purpose use. Colors remain true with no distortion. with Green, Like grey lenses, colors will remain true and UV and InfaRed light is absorbed well. Brown is Especially effective for filtering scattered blue light commonly found in hazy, foggy or low light conditions. Brown or amber Improve depth perception and contrast in variable light conditions. | Monel Metal - Soda’s choice of frame metal, a nickel alloy that is strong and durable. Monel is easily plated with various finishes, such as gold to give the glass a luxurious metalic finish.
Polycarb (PC) - a remarkably strong plastic. It weighs the least and is the most impact-resistant making it a perfect choice for rugged sunglass frames and lenses. The lens will also offer built-in ultraviolet protection. Polarized - A filter sandwiched between the front and back surface of the lens which filters out horizontally reflected glare and allows you to see through reflected glare on the surface of water, snow, ice, glass etc. lenses which are polarized reduce the glare effect produced by these random light waves which provide enhanced visual acuity and reduced eye fatigue. rx - Indicates that this particular frame can accomodate most prescription lenses. Many peole choose eyewear purchases based on this compatabilty. Temple - The "arm" of a pair of glasses, running from the tip of the ear to the lens area. Usually made of complimentary plastic or flexible metal. Toric lens - a lens shape edged from a cylindrical lens mold, rather than the typical convex shape most commonly used in sunglass lenses. This creates a unique lens shape and degree of wrap not found in most eyewear designs. |
